Last Week on Social - June19

Welcome to Last Week on Social, the blog series dedicated to providing a simple way to stay on top of the latest news and announcements from each of the major social media networks.

Every week, we round-up the latest updates from Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, Vine, YouTube, and others that may impact the way you use social media networks for your business.

For the busy period of June 13 – 19, here’s a breakdown of news from last week on social:

FACEBOOK

Messenger Updates

Several updates have been made to make it easier to start a conversation. These updates include the addition of a Favourites section to highlight the people that users message with most frequently, an Active Now section to see who is currently using the app, and reminders, such as birthdays.

New Tools to Increase and Measure Store Visits and Sales

A native store locator has been added to local awareness ads on Facebook, with an accompanying ‘store visits’ metric in ads reporting.

LINKEDIN

Acquisition by Microsoft

The title says it all.

PINTEREST

New Ad Targeting Options

Advertisers in the U.S.A. and U.K. – the only countries that currently have access to Pinterest ads manager – now have three new targeting options available: 1) customer list targeting, 2) website visitor retargeting, and 3) lookalike targeting.

TWITTER

Emoji Ad Targeting

In what feels like an April Fools’ joke, with the help of select Twitter Partners, advertisers can now target ads to users who have recently tweeted or engaged with tweets featuring emojis.

YOUTUBE

YouTube Director: Video Ad Creation Products for Businesses

YouTube Director is a suite of video ad creation products, primarily designed for small business: the YouTube Director for business app enables users to create video ads from their mobile device, YouTube Director onsite is a service that sends a professional filmmaker to shoot and edit an ad for free whenever a business spends $150 or more on ads, and YouTube Director automated video – you guessed it – automates the video creation process using existing assets like screenshots and logos.

Instagram and Vine had quiet news weeks with no announcements worth reporting.

As always, if we’ve missed something, please feel free to bring it to our attention in the comments.
